MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (CBS Tampa) — Miami Beach police say a menorah was desecrated by vandals who wrote “You killed Jesus” on it in graffiti.
WSVN-TV reports the holiday display made out of seashells was vandalized Sunday night.
“We’re not going to be discouraged, we’re gonna keep on going,” Rabbi Zev Katz told the station. “And when people try to stop us, we’re gonna say, ‘Not only are you not gonna stop us, but we’re gonna go over and, on top, and do more.’”
The station reports that the same menorah was vandalized 10 years ago three times in a span of three days.
“Originally, it had a history,” Roger Abramson, the artist who made the menorah, told WSVN. “The very first year, it was dealt a great deal of violence, and that’s why we built it out of shells because the first year it was torn down three times.”
The menorah was restored to its original piece after the graffiti was painted over and the seashells that were removed were replaced.
Miami Beach police are still searching for suspects in the case.
