Police: Woman, Unborn Child Killed On Way To Hospital By Drunk Driver

WINTER HAVEN, Fla (CBS Tampa) — Police say a drunk driver killed a 19-year-old in labor and her unborn baby while she was on her way to the hospital.

Polk County authorities say doctors performed an emergency C-section on Tiffany Ann Woodham but were unable to save the baby who was supposed to be named Novalee.

“I am so upset about it I can’t even cry,” her brother, Cody Breton, told Bay News 9. “Every day I would wake up and rub my sister’s stomach and tell her how much I loved her.”

Authorities arrested 27-year old Thomas Dick of Tulsa, Okla., and charged him with vehicular homicide, DUI manslaughter, and several other charges.

According to a press release, Woodham was in the car with three other people.

The driver, 32-year old Tawnya T. White, was taken to Winter Haven Hospital for bruises and lacerations.

Zachary Dave Rowles, 22, was also taken to Winter Haven Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Police say Rowles was Woodham’s fiance and father of the unborn child.

Pamela Cheverier, 37, was flown to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

Police say Dick was driving 20 mph over the speed limit with a blood alcohol content of .131, which is almost twice the legal limit.

Dick is currently in police custody at an area hospital and will be transported to the jail upon his medical release.

“It infuriates us because we have a 19-year-old young lady dead and her baby’s dead because someone cares so little about life that they’ll drink and drive,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd told WTSP-TV.

The Daily Ridge reports that her family is seeking to raise money to cover funeral costs since she did not have insurance.
