Parents Sue School District After Disabled Daughter Chokes To Death On School Bus

RIVERVIEW, Fla. (AP) — The parents of a 7-year-old disabled girl who choked while riding on a school bus and later died are suing the Hillsborough County school district.

Lisa and Dennis Herrera filed suit against the school district on Thursday, claiming it violated their daughter’s civil rights when they failed to properly position the girl in her wheelchair, failed to monitor her and failed to provide medical care when she started choking during a bus ride Jan. 24.

They say nobody checked to see if her wheelchair had been tilted back to keep her head from falling forward. The parents say neither the bus aide nor the driver called 911. Lisa Herrera found her daughter blue and unresponsive when she boarded the bus.

District officials say they won’t comment on pending litigation.
