Candidates Descend On Crucial Florida In Final Weeks

SUN CITY CENTER, Fla. (AP) — Both vice presidential candidates made their way around the crucial election state of Florida Friday, trying to shore up support from the party faithful and trying to sway undecided voters in the final weeks of the campaign.

Vice President Joe Biden visited the west Florida senior citizen enclave of Sun City Center at noontime, while Republican nominee Paul Ryan was scheduled to stop at an event at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

About 1,150 people — mostly retirees — enthusiastically greeted Biden, who hammered GOP nominee Mitt Romney on his remarks about women’s issues during the recent presidential debate.

“They do not believe that women have the right to control their own bodies,” Biden said. “The president and I are absolutely, positively committed that my daughter and the president’s daughters have every single opportunity to control their lives as my son and grandsons. It was made very clear that (Romney and Ryan) do not share that view.”

Biden was joined on stage by Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida.

Biden is scheduled to be in Fort Pierce later in the day and Ryan is in Palm Beach County before meeting up with Romney in Daytona Friday night.

Also, first lady Michelle Obama will visit Florida as will Romney’s wife, Ann.

On Monday, President Barack Obama and Romney will debate for the final time at Lynn University in Boca Raton.
