Florida City Policy Bans Hiring Smokers, Tobacco Users
DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (CBS Tampa) — The City Commission of Delray Beach is expected to make official a measure that prohibits the city from hiring people who smoke, chew or snuff tobacco.
According to the Florida Sun-Sentinel, the policy that no longer allows the city to hire smokers took effect on Monday.
Officials reportedly thought the move would be a money saver for a cash-strapped city looking to cut health care costs.
The paper learned that smokers can cost companies and government agencies alike in health and disability costs – an estimated $12,000.
The health benefits of promoting a non-smoking lifestyle were also allegedly a motivator behind the measure. Only Commissioner Angeleta Gray was said to have opposed the plan.
Those hired before Oct. 1 will not be held accountable, the Sun-Sentinel reported. The policy will only apply to new hires acquired after the cut-off date.
