Investigators: Car’s Poor Condition Contributed To Girl’s Death

BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) — Investigators say the poor condition of a car that struck a 4-year-old girl near Bradenton contributed to the accident.

The Florida Highway Patrol released preliminary results of its investigation Wednesday. It says the 1992 Lexus ES 300 that hit Daisylee Martinez was “in a state of disrepair.”

FHP says the child’s mother and another family member were trying to push the car closer to a residence last week. Gracie Moreno started the car and turned the wheels to the left just as her daughter walked in front of the vehicle. It lunged forward, hitting the child.

Authorities say the car then traveled across the yard, hitting a fence, gate and two utility poles before it stopped.

A neighbor performed CPR, but the girl was pronounced dead at the hospital.
