Remember the days of going to the record store to buy a new CD? Well, the Class of 2016 probably doesn’t.

The kids entering college this year grew up during the digital era where music was available as MP3’s and listened to on iPods, a new study shows.

For the last fourteen years, Beloit College, a liberal arts school in Wisconsin, has release their Mindset List, which looks at “the cultural touchstones that shape the lives of students entering college this fall.” Professors looking to rid their lectures of dated references have also used the list.

This year’s freshman, most of whom were born in 1994, may still know what a radio is, but they more likely listen to it on their laptops. They also spend a lot of their time reminding their parents that CDs and DVDs are not “tapes.”

Where their mom’s fawned over guitar gods, these kids have a thing for good music programmers like Skrillex, who is bringing electronic dance music, better known as EDM, to the masses.

These mid-Nineties babies like Justin Bieber and One Direction’s Harry Styles also are the first generation to watch TV everywhere but actually on their TV. And instead of the sci-fi drama Lost being their iconic TV series, it’s the gritty realism of Breaking Bad. As for textbooks, most are available via Kindle and iPad so it will be much easier to lug them around.
