St. Petersburg Delays Vote On RNC Event Zone

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Lingering questions about rules for an “event zone” for the Republican National Convention’s party at Tropicana Field prompted St. Petersburg city leaders to delay approval.

The city council decided to delay a vote until mid-August. The American Civil Liberties Union wants stricter language included in the temporary ordinance that makes it clear that protesters can gather as long as they don’t block streets or sidewalks.

The convention will be held across the bay in Tampa. On Aug. 26, St. Petersburg will host the event’s kickoff party. More than 20,000 people are expected to attend.

St. Petersburg residents and business owners wonder how the proposed zone will affect traffic and free speech rights.

Tampa has created a similar zone for the four-day convention, which will be held Aug. 27-30.
