Tristan Prettyman just released the music video for “My Oh My.” The first single off her upcoming album Cedar + Gold, Prettyman told CBS Local it’s a song about “this journey through your first love.”

“I co-wrote that song with Kevin Griffin from Better Than Ezra,” she revealed. “He came to my house and we wrote ‘My Oh My’ in about 30 minutes in my living room.”

Prettyman said Griffin had the rhythm and the first chord for the song.

“I just loved it from the minute I heard it. ‘You got my heart on a string/You want me back again and you know I’ll do anything,’” she said referencing the track’s first line.

She further explained how the song details the cat and mouse game of a relationship gone wrong.

“The whole song is this journey through your first love and breaking up and thinking you’ll never see him again and there’s no chance and then they come back into your life. And you’re like, ‘Oh man, I still like you. What’s the deal with that?’” she said.

“Then it ends up being this amazing thing. And then you’re back together and then you’re broken up again,” she said. “Why do we keep going back to things that aren’t good for us? How much is going to be enough? How hurt do we have to get to get over it finally?”

Fascinated by being in the presence of someone that makes your heart skip a beat, Prettyman learned from her own mistakes while writing the song.

“Writing that song made me more aware of the situation that was actually happening,” she said. “Often times I’ll write songs and I’ll kind of understand what they mean and then I’ll have an epiphany several months later where I actually have a moment of relating to one of my songs. ‘Oh, that’s what that means! Okay.’ And it kind of lays it all out there for me.”

As far as finding closure within her current single, Prettyman is still trying to figure things out.

“I don’t know if I’ve learned my lesson yet,” she laughed.
