TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Tampa police say two officers shot and killed a teen who drew a shotgun on them and refused to drop it.
It happened about 7:20 p.m. Sunday at an apartment complex on Central Avenue, police said in a news release.
Two officers had been summoned to reports of a man firing a gun. A male who matched a description of the suspect began walking away from them. As he ran up a set of stairs, he drew a pistol-grip shotgun from his pants leg, according to the news release.
The police statement said officers fired when he refused commands to drop the gun. He died later at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Police identified the slain teen as 16-year-old Javon Neal of Tampa.
The officers were identified as Gregory Pryor, 36, a 5-year veteran of the force; and Shannon Murphy, 35, with nine years on the force.
Both officers are being placed on administrative leave, a standard response following a police shooting.
