Tampa Area Deputies Shoot, Injure Armed Man

SEFFNER, Fla. (AP) — Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies shot a man they were trying to talk out of killing himself when he pointed a gun at them.

Deputies were called to a mobile home park in Seffner Sunday evening by a resident who saw a neighbor on a nearby porch holding a gun to his head.

When they arrived, deputies say 54-year-old Craig Douglas Vilsack was drinking alcohol and holding the gun.

After 30 minutes, deputies say Vilsack started waving the gun around and walked to the front of the home. He ignored warnings to drop the gun and four deputies fired at him.

Vilsack was taken to a hospital. There was no word on his condition.

The deputies weren’t injured but all four have been placed on administrative leave, pending an investigation.
