ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Tampa Bay area authorities say they don’t believe a man found dead in a front yard was hit by a 14-year-old driver.
St. Petersburg police say the teen and a 12-year-old passenger were speeding through a neighborhood early Sunday when the 14-year-old lost control and crashed into a utility pole.
Police say the vehicle continued sliding until it came to rest in a front yard. The driver and passenger fled before police arrived, but police say both have been identified.
During the investigation, 20-year-old Jeremy Davon Mayers was found unconscious in the yard near the crash scene and later pronounced dead at a hospital. Police say his cause of death remains under investigation, but a preliminary exanimation didn’t reveal any injury suggesting he was hit by a vehicle.
