PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) — Authorities are investigating after a 14-year-old girl was struck and killed while walking along a South Florida road.

Brittany Hare was talking on her cell phone and walking in Port St. Lucie when sheriff’s deputies say Jesse Mcinerney’s van drifted from his lane, hit the teen from behind, carrying her more than 30 yards. A witness said Mcinerney did not have his headlights on.

Authorities said he was being followed at the time, but declined to give details about Sunday night’s accident.

The case remains under investigation.

According to sheriff’s office records, Mcinerney has been arrested more than a dozen times since 1985 on charges including robbery, cocaine possession and aggravated assault.
