Facility Workers Fired Over Pregnant Patient

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Officials say two people have been fired and a third person has resigned after a patient at a Panhandle mental-health facility gave birth to a baby that is now on life support.

David Wilkins, secretary of the Florida Department of Children and Families, said Thursday that the woman was admitted to Florida State Hospital in October and soon began expressing concerns about her pregnancy.

She repeated the concerns in December, when she was taken to a Tallahassee hospital, where she gave birth to a boy.

A multi-agency investigation found that the mother’s care did not meet DCF’s standards. Wilkins wouldn’t say whether the baby’s condition was directly caused by the actions of the employees.

Prosecutors will review the case to determine whether criminal charges should be filed.
