Florida Deputy Shoots Man That Broke Into His Home

GOLDEN GATES ESTATES, Fla. (AP) — A Collier County Sheriff’s deputy says he shot a man who was trying to get into his home and threatened to kill him.

A sheriff’s office report says Cpl. Kenneth Vila was awakened by loud banging noises Sunday morning outside his home in Golden Gates Estates. Vila went outside with his gun and was confronted by 20-year-old Jean Rosaldo who was trying to get inside after smashing a window.

Vila told authorities he ordered Rosaldo to stop, but the suspect kept advancing toward him. Vila told detectives Rosaldo had threatened to kill him and said he knew Vila was a deputy. Vila then fired one shot, striking Roslado in the chest.

Roslado remains hospitalized. His condition isn’t known.

Vila is on administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting.
