CLEARWATER, Fla. (CBS Tampa) – A Clearwater woman who believed her baby was possessed by demons tried to throw her 3-month-old son into the Clearwater Harbor on Tuesday afternoon, police say.

Police records show Lydia Chako, 39, was arrested and charged with child abuse after police found her standing on the seawall at Palm Bluff Street holding her baby.

ABC Action News reported that the property manager at Chako’s apartment complex entered her apartment, located at 1209 North Osceola Ave., after noticing the unit was flooded. The manager called police when she found Chako throwing things around and making strange comments.

The manager said that Chacko told him that lizards and snakes were on the baby and she was keeping the demons out.

Chako left her apartment carrying her infant by his feet and was found by police on the seawall. The police distracted Chako and took the baby from her. She was arrested after a brief struggle.

Authorities believe Chako flooded her apartment with intentions to harm her son when the property manager walked in and then ran to the seawall to toss him into the water.

The baby was not hurt during the incident. The Department of Children and Families took custody of the child.
