TAMPA, Fla. (CBS Tampa) - Visitors of the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital are reminded of the price of freedom every time they enter the hospital.
Many patients in the hospital’s care are in the spinal cord, traumatic brain and blast injury treatment programs. They are made up of many men and women who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
A group of local veterans, members of the Westside Nam Knights Motorcycle Club, knows what it feels like to come back from war. The club helps support American veterans and police officers in times of need.
This Saturday, the club’s sixth annual Pig Roast in Riverview will benefit the Haley House Fund and other law enforcement charities. The Haley House Fund provides accommodations for families visiting soldiers during their recovery from illness and injury.
The President of the Westside Nam Knights, Pappy, said over 1200 pounds of pig will be roasted at the event. There will be live music from three bands, along with dancing from the Coyote Ugly girls and the Chili Chicks.
Other members of the community are attending the event as well, including WQYK country station DJ Dave McKay.
“We support the Nam Knights Club in all their efforts in helping our American heroes and their families,” he said. McKay is donating a guitar signed by country musician Charlie Daniels to the event to help raise funds.
In the past five years, the Westside Nam Knights have raised $45,000 to donate to the Haley House Fund. The fund is run by volunteers and opens its center to families who live more than 50 miles away from the hospital and are not financially able to stay nearby.
The Pig Roast is on Saturday, April 14 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Pole Barn on Bloomingdale Avenue in Riverview. Tickets at the door are $15. A parachuting team will arrive at 1 p.m. and food will be served until 4 p.m.
