Cops: Grandmother Kills Husband, Buries Body In Herb Garden

LAKE ALFRED, Fla. (CBS Tampa) — A grandmother is accused of killing her husband and burying his body in her herb garden at their Lake Alfred home.

Polk County authorities arrested and charged 64-year-old Barbara Scott with first degree murder in the death of 77-year-old Benny Scott.

According to a Polk County Sheriff’s Office report, Scott – who previously served five years in an Oklahoma prison for embezzlement — shot her husband in the back of the head and bound his arms and legs by ropes before burying him.

Scott’s daughter, Sonya Braudway, turned her mother into police on March 26 after questioning the whereabouts of her father who was missing for months.

Braudway told police that her mother said that Benny Scott went to visit a sick friend in Oklahoma. When Braudway talked to her brother who lives in Oklahoma, she realized her mother was giving differing stories about her father.

Scott initially said that her husband died in January after falling in the shower and hitting his head. She later told police that Benny shot himself. She says she then panicked, wrapped his body in a tarp and buried him in the backyard.

Police found the husband’s body buried in a two-foot grave on March 27.

Scott is currently being held at the Polk County Jail.
