Honeymoon Island Swimmer Drowns While Trying to Save Kids

DUNEDIN, Fla. (CBS Tampa) –  According to the Department of Environmental Protection, a man drowned while trying to save a family in distress at Honeymoon Island State Park in Dunedin.

The man, whose identity has not yet been released, saw children in the water near the pet beach and swam out to help them.  The Tampa Tribune reported that an eyewitness said the children were caught in a rip current with their mother and father.  When the man swam out to help them, he got caught in the current and began to struggle.

The man was taken to Dunedin Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.  Park authorities said rip currents have been a problem in the area for the past few days.
