WEEKI WACHEE, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a 29-year-old Gainesville man drowned during a dive at the Weeki Wachee Springs State Park.
The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office says Marson Ashly Kay was conducting a dive with Karst Underwater Research on Saturday afternoon.
He and five other divers went into a cavern with several tight rock formations. Later, during their ascent, investigators Kay became disoriented and got stuck in an opening that was too small for him to swim through.
The other divers found Kay and tried to free him but were not successful. They went to the surface to call for a help. A rescue team reached Kay shortly thereafter, but authorities say he was already dead.
Kay was a certified cave diver and investigators say they do not suspect foul play.
