Flowers are blooming and birds are squawking so that must mean it’s spring. Spring also means lots of shows and concerts coming to the Tampa area. Here is a guide to some of the biggest names coming to town this spring.

Johnny Mathis

Johnny Mathis is an American icon. Columbia records placed Mathis under the direction of legendary bandleader Mitch Miller, and in 1956 Mathis recorded, “Wonderful, Wonderful” and “It’s Not For Me To Say,” the first recordings of countless memorable classics. Soon after, “Chances Are” would become his first #1 hit. After being introduced on the “Ed Sullivan Show,” Johnny Mathis became a household name. He is one of only five recording artist to have Top 40 Hits spanning each of his first four decades. The music of Mathis will forever stand the test of time. Chicago is an American “rock and roll band with horns”, and they will be in concert at the Ruth Eckerd Hall on Friday, April 20th. The group has recorded five #1 albums and 21 top ten hits, including their first album, “Chicago Transit Authority” released in 1969. It was a double-album sensation receiving heavy airplay. The album spawned earlier classics, “Does Anybody Know What Time It Is?” “Beginnings” and “Questions 67 and 68.” Chicago’s popularity escalated with their second double- album titled, “Chicago or (Chicago II).” The album included the ballad, “Colour My World,” “Make Me Smile,” and “25 or 6 to 4.” “Chicago V” produced Top 40 hits, “Saturday in The Park,” and “Dialogue (Part I&II).”  Through the years, Chicago has produced hit after hit and 25 of Chicago’s 32 albums have been certified platinum and record sales top the 100,000,000 mark.

Elvis Costello & The Imposters

Also performing at the Ruth Eckerd Hall, Elvis Costello presents “The Revolver Tour.” Elvis Costello first became affiliated with the Punk/New Wave scene in the mid to late ’70s. Costello’s first single was called, “Less Than Zero” followed by his debut album, “My Aim Is True” in 1977.  Elvis Costello scored his first big hit with, “Watching The Detectives.” In 1987, Costello began songwriting collaborations with Paul McCartney. Two years later he released the album, “Spike” which included the single, “Veronica” becoming his biggest American hit peaking at #19. In 2004, Elvis Costello was named one of Rolling Stone Magazines 100 Greatest Artist of All Time. Costello has released more than 30 studio albums on his own and with The Attractions, The Imposters and other collaborations. Elvis Costello & the Attractions were inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.

David Cassidy

We first met actor/singer/songwriter/guitarist David Cassidy when he was cast by ABC as a teenage pop star for the TV series “The Partridge Family” in 1970. The sitcom was inspired after The Cowsills, an American pop band comprised of six siblings and their mother. “The Partridge Family” premiered in late 1970, around the same time Cassidy/Partridge Family’s, “I Think I Love You” was released. After the song became a huge hit, David Cassidy began recording solo albums. Within the year, Cassidy produced the single, “Cherish” reaching #9 on the U.S. charts. Cassidy began touring extensively selling out venues worldwide and became a teen idol sensation. Today Cassidy has sold more than 25-million records and earned multiple Grammy nominations, be sure to catch him at The Club Treasure Island on Friday, April 13th.

Van Halen

Van Halen makes their way to the Tampa Bay Times Forun for a concert on Saturday, April 14th. In 1978, Van Halen’s self titled debut album became an instant mainstay on AOR radio with the release of American rock classics, “Runnin’ With The Devil,” “You Really Got Me,” and “Jamie’s Cryin’.”  Van Halen sold more than 80-million albums worldwide and held the most #1 hits on Billboards Mainstream Rock Chart. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, their current lineup features the return of original flamboyant frontman David Lee Roth on vocals, virtuoso Eddie Van Halen on lead and rhythm guitars, Alex Van Halen on drums, and Wolfgang Van Halen on bass guitar. “A Different Kind of Truth” is Van Halen’s 12th studio album, released in February.
