Josh Johnson Signs with 49ers

Former Bucs QB Josh Johnson has signed with the 49ers Thursday.

The 4th-yr. pro had visited with the Redskins Wednesday, but with them having the 2nd-pick, and also having Rex Grossman, John Beck, and Jonathon Crompton already on the roster, it was unlikely to happen from the get-go.

Current Redskins GM, Bruce Allen, drafted Johnson in 5th round of the 2008 NFL Draft.  The signing gives Johnson a chance to reunite with 49ers HC John Harbough, who coached Johnson with the University of San Diego.

After last season’s starter Alex Smith resigned with the 49ers on a 3-yr deal, Johnson will battle last season’s 2nd-round pick Colin Kaepernick as the backup to Smith. Johnson and Kaepernick are similar type QB’s who have mobility, and excel at throwing on the run. Kaepernick is being groomed as the future of the franchise.

Josh Johnson has started 5 games in his career with 5 TD’s and 10 INT’s during his time with the Bucs.
