ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — St. Petersburg Police say a teenager is hospitalized in stable condition after being accidentally shot by his 9-year-old cousin.
Police spokesman Mike Puetz says 16-year-old Anas Jaber initially told officers that he was the victim of a drive-by shooting Saturday afternoon.
Police say the teen later said he was playing video games when his cousin pointed a gun at him. The younger boy had found the gun in the house. Jaber told police the gun fired as he was telling the boy to put down the weapon.
Jaber was shot in the neck and left hand. According to police, Jaber said he initially lied to officers to protect his cousin.
No charges have been filed.
Puetz says officers recovered two rifles from the residence.
