TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A hazardous material team and the bomb squad are at the scene of an attempted gasoline theft in the Tampa Bay area.
Hillsborough County Sheriff’s officials say several suspects parked a van over the in-ground fuel tanks at a BP gas station in the 8600 block of Citrus Park Drive just after 1 a.m. on Tuesday and began siphoning gasoline into the vehicle.
Deputies say the suspects abandoned the van — with several hundred gallons of gasoline inside — sometime after 1:10 a.m. Tuesday. They say about 25 gallons of gas spilled into the parking lot.
Officials say the gas station and several nearby businesses will be closed until the parking lot is cleaned and the van is secured.
Anyone with any information reference the suspect(s) is asked to call the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office at 247-8200 or anyone with any information regarding the identity and whereabouts of this suspect(s) and who wants to be eligible for a cash reward is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-TIPS (8477), report anonymously online at www.crimestopperstb.com or text “CSTB plus your tip” to C-R-I-M-E-S (274637).
