Polk County Mom Accused of Killing Baby Set for Court Sunday

BARTOW, Fla. (AP) — The Lakeland mother accused of killing her 1-year-old son will be making her first court appearance.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office transported 32-year-old Neha Patel to the Polk County jail on Saturday.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says Patel will make her first court appearance Sunday in Bartow. She faces a charge of first-degree murder.

Patel was arrested Friday at the Tampa International Airport.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said Patel and her son had gone missing Thursday. When Patel returned to her Lakeland home Friday morning, she reportedly told her husband she had killed their son and she threatened to kill herself before she fled.

Judd said Patel suffers from postpartum depression but wasn’t taking her medicine.

It wasn’t clear Saturday if Patel had an attorney.
