ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — St. Petersburg police say an officer driving his patrol car fatally struck a pedestrian crossing the street in a wheelchair.

Police spokesman Mike Puetz says 26-year-old Officer Mehmedin Karic never saw 45-year-old Harold Charles Fleming, who was ejected from his wheelchair when it was struck by the front of Karic’s car early Saturday.

Puetz says Fleming was wearing dark clothes and the nearest street light was out.

Fleming was pronounced dead at a hospital. Karic was not injured.

Puetz says Karic was not responding to a call or using his emergency lights at the time of the accident.
