ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (CBS Tampa) – There were some tense moments today in St. Petersburg for students, teachers and parents at Bay Vista Elementary School after the school was on lockout due to of nearby gunfire.
Bay Vista Fundamental Elementary School in south St. Petersburg was in lockout for about an hour after at least one person was grazed by a bullet in a nearby armed-robbery attempt. The lockout was lifted about 3 p.m.
A St. Petersburg Police reports says officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 800 block of 62nd Avenue South at 1:30 p.m. At the scene, police questioned three people who said they were victims of an attempted armed robbery. There was no sign of the suspect when police arrived.
St. Petersburg police officers came onto the campus and held students beyond the 2:15 p.m. final bell, as they continued to search the area for the suspect with no success.
The suspect was described as a black male wearing a gray and purple hooded sweatshirt.
