Brazilian Suspect in Cruise Rape Held Without Bail

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A Brazilian man accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl on a cruise ship is being held in the Broward County Jail without bail.

Broward Circuit Judge Matthew Destry ordered 20-year-old Luiz Scavone to be held without bail Friday. Scavone’s attorney declined to comment on the ruling Sunday when reached by The Associated Press.

Scavone is charged with lewd and lascivious battery on a victim younger than 16 and older than 12. He has denied the allegations.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports the judge was concerned that Scavone would flee to South America if allowed out on bail.

Scavone’s 15-year-old brother also faces charges in the case. Prosecutors say both lured the girl from Iowa to a private room on Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas on Jan. 3.
