1 Fatally Shot by Tampa Bay-Area Deputy

HUDSON, Fla. (AP) — Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting in the Tampa Bay area.

According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, Cpl. Jose Valenzuela shot and killed 49-year-old Brian Keith Naab on Sunday night in Hudson.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Kevin Doll says Valenzuela was responding to a call from residents reporting bullets hitting their houses. Doll says that when Valenzuela arrived, Naab and his girlfriend were struggling over a shotgun in the front yard.

Valenzuela ordered them to drop the shotgun. Doll says that’s when Naab pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the deputy.

Doll says Valenzuela shot Naab multiple times. No other injuries were reported.

Doll says Valenzuela is a nine-year veteran of the sheriff’s office and is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
