Police Officer Shot by Suspects in Central Fla.

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a Lakeland police officer suffered life-threatening injuries after being shot while on patrol.

Lakeland Police Chief Lisa Womack says 25-year-old Arnulfo Crispin underwent surgery early Monday at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. His condition was not immediately available.

Womack says Crispin stopped to talk to three suspicious men near an apartment complex about 10:15 p.m. Sunday. When a second officer arrived about seven minutes later, he found Crispin unresponsive.

Police cordoned off a large section of the area overnight as officers searched vehicles and went door-to-door seeking information about the suspects.

Police spokeswoman Ann Dinges says at least 12 law enforcement agencies offered assistance as the search for the suspects continued early Monday.
