BROOKSVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a 40-year-old man beat and strangled his father, then buried the body in their backyard in a remote neighborhood north of Tampa.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office reported Friday that Christopher Burke confessed to killing his 61-year-old father, Raymond, and burying him in their yard in Brooksville, about 60 miles north of Tampa.

Christopher Burke was arrested Thursday and charged with second-degree murder. Jail records show he’s being held without bond. His next court date is set for Jan. 10. No attorney information for Burke was immediately available.

Authorities say his girlfriend was a witness to the crime but has not yet been charged.

The sheriff’s office exhumed the body Friday, but did not immediately release any details. Investigators say Burke drained his father’s bank accounts.
