Orlando police are investigating a murder in which a woman was doused with gasoline and then set on fire.
According to WOFL-TV, police responded to a 911 call Sunday night when they encountered Abraham Oliver, 46, who told authorities he started a fire.
Police saw smoke and fire billowing from the house when they arrived on the scene.
The officers tried putting out the flames with fire extinguishers and towels, but were pushed back by the flames. When firefighters entered the home they found the body of 42-year-old Karen Peterson.
Police believe that a gun might have been used inside the house.
“Right now we don’t know whether the victim may have been shot and died as a result of a gunshot or did the victim die as a result of the fire,” Lt. Barbara Jones told WOFL-TV.
The Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting an investigation to determine Peterson’s cause of death.
Oliver is in custody and has been charged with first-degree murder.
