ST. PETERSBURG (CBS) Sam Fuld hit a triple last night that he will remember for the rest of his career in the major leagues.
The Rays were down 7-3 in the bottom of the ninth when Fuld came to the plate and hit the game winning triple to drive in Elliot Johnson. He would go on to run the entire 360 feet to win the game at home plate on a throwing error by Royals second baseman Johnny Giavotella.
Matt Joyce started off the rally for the Rays with a single in the ninth, and the next four batters in the lineup brought Tampa Bay to within one.
That’s when Fuld unloaded on a cutter and gave it a ride to right-center field. He sprinted around the bases and beat a close play at home with a head first slide and just remained at home plate in utter disbelief.
The team rushed the field to embrace their teammate for a walk-off triple that will go down as arguably the best walk-off win in Rays’ history.
Wade Davis (8-7) went 6 1/3 innings for the Rays, but the story Wednesday night was the explosive offensive surge when the game seemed out of reach.
The win brought the team to 6-3 during their 10-game homestand and 62-54 on the year.
